UPDATED (Rumors: Pope steps down over new scandals to hit the Catholic Church): The pope has discovered Twitter and gained more then 150k followers on the first day.
by admin on Dec.03, 2012, under General
Pope Benedict XVI has found his way to Twitter. In under one day the account @pontifex (English) has gained more then 150.000 followers. When you add the other @Pontifex accounts (in other languages): @pontifex_es, @pontifex_it, @pontifex_pt, @pontifex_de, @pontifex_pl, @pontifex_ar and @pontifex_fr the total amount of followers exceeds 210.000.
As we all know by know the Pope will soon ‘retire’. More and more rumors are emerging that this could have something to do with another wave of potential scandals (sex-, money- and gay priests related) to hit the Catholic Church again. Full article about this subject on CNN -> CLICK HERE TO READ
UPDATE 12th of December: The pope has posted his first tweet (as was announced):
Benedict XVI (@Pontifex) posted at 11:28am – 12 dec 12: ” Dear friends, I am pleased to get in touch with you through Twitter. Thank you for your generous response. I bless all of you from my heart. ” (see tweet at https://twitter.com/Pontifex/status/278808536404852736)
UPDATE 4th of december: the @pontifex accounts now total more then 500.000 followers (in only 2 days!).
With the Vatican struggling to keep their churches full new strategies are needed. Reaching young believers is proving to be difficult and although social media are a complex phenomenon for an organization that not always likes to have everything out in the open, the Catholic Church is not ‘a stranger’ when it comes to implementing new media in their communication efforts.
In 2009 the Vatican launched www.pope2you.net, offering an app called “The pope meets you on Facebook”. It also allows the pope’s speeches and messages to be uploaded to smartphones. In 2011, the Vatican started its own news Web site Newsva.va.
The Catholic Church have always been ‘early adapters’ when it comes to using new technologies for their communication purposes. In 1896, Pope Leo XIII became the first pope to appear on film. In 1931 the Vatican founded Vatican Radio and in 1949, Pope Pius XII was the first to appear on television.
Back to the new Catholic presence on Twitter. The Pope will not post himself but will engage and approve the content. Via the hashtag #askpontifex twitter-users can ask him / the Vatican questions. Starting on the 12th of December thep Pope will start posting answers to the questions posted.
Pope Benedict is not the only religious leader to use twitter. Other religious leaders have found great success with this network like The Dalia Lama (@DalaiLama), Rick Warren (@RickWarren), Joel Osteen (@JoelOsteen).
Of course we’ll monitor the @pontifex account closely: how will it fit in the total communication strategy of the Vatican? What social networks are next? And maybe the most relevant question: will the Vatican gain more believers through implementing this social media network?! The pope seems to think so. Last year he wrote that new media and social networks offered “a great opportunity”.

by admin on May.11, 2012, under General
Here we go again. Thousands of Twitter passwords have been hacked.
In this post I’ll tell you a little bit about how to protect yourself and how to help reduce the problem for others!
Please reshare this post so we can stop the b#st@rds that keep hacking accounts!
Step 1 : How to detect the threat and prevent your password from being hacked.
In most cases you can easily prevent your Twitter password from being hacked. 9 out of 10 cases the hack will simply be posted into your DM box by one of your twitter contact (who have been hacked already). Although the text may differ it it usually something like the picture i’ve posted below (click to enlarge)
The DM will include a link DONT CLICK IT (!!!!!!) this link will hack your password.
Bottom line: if you have ANY DOUBT that your contact might have posted this message don’t click the link…
Step 2: Warn the person who’s account has been hacked and just sent you the hacked DM
Send a message (NOT VIA DM) to the person you’ve just received the infected DM from he/she probably doesn’t know their account has been hacked. So write a new (open) message and @-mention the person. Use a message (in the language you would normally communicate in with this person) like :
“I’ve just received a infected Twitter DM – reset your Twitter PW asap”.
Once your contact has reset the password the hackers no longer have acces to their accounts (normally).
If you have any other means of contacting the person who’s account has been hacked please do so and tell them to reset their password and prevent other accounts being hacked.
Step 3: How to reset your Twitter password
If you are logged in (via the webbrowser version) go to : https://twitter.com/settings/password and follow instructions.
If you are not logged in or can’t access your account anymore go to : https://twitter.com/account/resend_password and follow instructions.
What to do if resetting Twitter password does not solve the problem ?!
If resetting the password does not help fixing your (of your friends) problem then it could also be the case that you’ve granted acces to a related APP which uses the Twitter API. Check all your permissions for external applications (after logging in) via the link : https://twitter.com/settings/applications
Here you’ll see a list of all applications that have access to your Twitter account. If you don’t trust any of the applications just hit ‘REVOKE ACCESS’. Please be carefull – apps that you use, but might have forgotten about (for example because you have granted this access many many months ago), will NOT be able to use the Twitter API anymore and might not function anymore!
Together we can make Twitter a safer place!

Updates added (eg. how to port your Facebook contacts to Google+) : Google+ – will it win the battle against facebook, twitter and maybe even other social media channels?
by admin on Jul.05, 2011, under General
Need a Google+ / Googleplus invite? Please e-mail me your gmail-adres and I’ll send an invite!
Google has tried and failed to strengthen its position as a major player in the realm of social media. Google Wave and Google Buzz were (sometimes clumsily) launched and failed to raise applause from social media users.
Now Google has launched the bèta version of Google+ and it looks that they have finally ‘got it right’
Can Google+ ‘win’ the battle against Facebook and Twitter (and other social media channels)? In the last few years they (Twitter and Facebook) have already gained an enormous user-base and have established a solid market-share and Google+ has yet to prove itself to the social media community.
So at this time it’s to early to answer the question if Google+ will win the battle against the current ‘social media giants’ but the signs are certainly there.
Basically Google took all the best elements of currently existing platforms and combined them into their new social media en-devour Google+.
But they did more. Especially the way to group contacts is extremely smart. You can put your contacts in ‘ circles ‘ grouping them by, for example “family”, “business contacts” and “friends”.
But there’s (much) more why I think that Google+ is an interesting new platform:
- you can add photos, QR codes, links and much more interesting rich-media information to your ‘about’ page
- you get unlimited storage on Picasa (Google’s photo and video sharing platform – should Flickr be worried?)
- search results (SEO) could be hugely impacted in the future by using Google+
- Google+ is seamlessly integrated with their mobile platform Android (Iphone/Ipad apps in the future?)
- the free live video-chat feature (possible with multiple users) makes Google+ stand out from Facebook and is a very interesting option
- the stream of posts from you and your Google+ friends looks a bit like a combination between Facebook and Twitter (best of both worlds)
- option to show posts per circle
- if you have location enabled on your mobile device Google+ can create circles ‘nearby’ (interesting feature for location based marketing)
- ‘sparks’ option; a (currently) small selection of topics showing you posts about the interest-field you’ve selected
- potential for growth is enormous because Google can easily expand their system with for example social bookmarks, a ‘quora-like’ Q&A feature and of course their own services like Google Docs, Google Calendar, Google Music etc.
- the search engine let’s you find people easily and adding new friends to your circles is as easy as counting from 1 to 3
through implementation of Google’s “Google Wallet” payment system it could well become an interesting e-merce and/or crowd-funding platform
So there we have it. A long list of interesting Google+ features that should trigger other social media platform to better follow their new competitor very closely.
BUT Google+ is still in bèta… Only people invited by current Google+ users can join (if you need an invite please contact me). And even then you might be in for a wait because Google opens and closes the ‘doors’ to their new platform as they please.
Of course the staggering numbers of users that platforms like Facebook and Twitter have will not be reached by Google+ as long as the platform is still in bèta but in my opinion they just might have just finally struck ‘social media gold’ with this new platform.
As a social media marketeer I’ll keep experimenting with this new platform to try out the unique features of Google+ and see how they could be suitable for our clients. I think it is an interesting addition to the already (very) wide range of social media channels.
Keep in mind that social media channels come and go (sometimes very fast) but I think Google+ is here to stay.

Social Media ?! En wat nu ?

Social Media ?!
